Hi Guys

If you put the back seats down in a VW Golf, would you be able to fit a large mens mountain bike in there, without having to take the front wheel out of the bike?

Thanks

This will probably depend on which generation but for a mark 4 like mine, no it won't.

Back seats down will fit two bikes with removable front wheels though. I suppose with just one bike you might be able to squash it in if you rammed the passenger seat forwards and tilted it forwards too but I wouldn't like to put money on being able to manage it.

Thank you for the reply, I thought it might be wishful thinking.

Can anyone answer the same question for an Audi A3 sportback? i.e. can you fit in a full size mens mountain bike in the back without taking the front wheel out?

Thanks

I can't say either way but IIRC the 'new' A3 sportback is longer than previous generations i.e. most chance in the one that came out last year.

Octavia might be the best option from this platform, I guess.

My 64 a3 sportback boot has far less usable space than the mk5 golf i had even if the specs may suggest otherwise (i have no idea if they do or don't :))

Can people tell me, for both the Golf and the A3, whether the back of the front passenger seat can be tilted that far forward, as this would allow extra room for the front tyre of a mountain bike and avoid having to take it off.

Thanks

I'd much rather be able to put the bike straight in and take it straight out. I know it doesn't take long to take out the wheel, but it's still more faffing around that I'd rather avoid.

Rgds

its not going to go straight in and straight out , to get it to fit in any hatchback without removing the wheel is going to take a fair bit of maneuvering (certainly more faff than taking a wheel or even two off!) , eventually you will probably cover every single piece of interior trim in mud or scuffs. even in an estate its not just a straight forward drop in the bike and go

far far easier to just remove a wheel or if this is a common thing then bike rack

Err first reply is a bit of a fail then.
I have a mk4 golf and yes you can get a mans mountain bike in the back with the seats down, no problem at all.
Mine was last in there in August when I took it to the top of the Malverns for a ride out.

Lift seat base upright
Pull headrests off
Lower seat back
Put bike in.
No faffing at all

I was also thinking it would be that simple (was a while ago I had my last golf mind you).

But saying that, if you can't be bothered to take the front wheel off to get it in the motor easily, then perhaps biking isn't the correct past time? I mean, it really does only take a few seconds.

Surprised it fits without removing the wheel to be honest, it's enough of a squeeze with the wheel off really, I wouldn't have expected it to fit with the wheel left on. It must be pretty much wedged against the back of the front seats?

With my mk6 golf the front passenger seat tilted forward a lot. However, the main problem was the fact when the back seats are folded down they dont fold completely flat so you lose a lot of room.I had to put the bike in front first as the handlebars hit the boot window.Think I'll get a roof mount for it as I can see lots of scuff marks appearing in the future, even taking the front wheel off doesn't eliminate the width problem I had at boot entrance.

It takes like 15 seconds?

I hope to be chucking the bike in the car regularly, so I want minimum inconvenience. I am looking at swapping my car, so ability to chuck the bike straight in is important. I presently have an estate, but would prefer a smaller hatchback if possible.

would this not depend on the golf and bike in question? 3dr/5dr/estate 24"/26"/29"???

stupid just to 'ask' like that with no info?

I am thinking of swapping my car. I currently have an estate, but would prefer something smaller providing I can chuck a bike in the back without having to take the front wheel out, so I'm looking at the viability of this. So far, the Golf and A3 Sportback have caught my eye.

Rgds

Well if it's the Estate I can't see you having any issues at all as mine is a 5 door hatch and it goes in fine
