This may sound silly, but is an External Hard drive just a HDD outside of the PC?

Im looking at getting this External Hard Drive:

Would I notice a difference if I got it as a Hard Drive/Is there any performance loss with it being external?

Im looking to be able to run some games off of it alongside my current 1tb HDD and 240gb SDD.

I dont mean top of the range games, just average games that aren't heavy on performance.

Thanks.

It'll be a bit slower than an internal drive but should be fine for games that don't need a lot of hard drive access.

Make sure your computer has USB 3 because USB 2 would be too slow.

you can also get a 5.25" hdd dock bay,and you plug a regular internal hdd in when needed,connects direct to the mb sata so no speed loss compared to usb

using one myself

no real performance loss from an external mechanical drive if its on esata/usb3. the drive constantly spinning down might drive you mad though.

wast sure you could run games from a external drive

sure can, and its fine for the most part. well except when the drive goes to sleep and the game wants to pull more info from the drive. pause.....pause......pause.....click, ah there we go.

annoying.
