Hi guys,

Just recently purchased a couple of Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 750GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (ST3750330AS), and I'm experiencing some issues that I'm not totally sure if they are problems.

I'll list the issues I may have and if anyone had experienced these problems same as me, could you say if this is normal or their faulty.

1. Hard drives are noisy, sounds like a clicking sound, makes me think it's either broken or when the hard drive works, its just loud.

2. When I began to create a partition and format the hard drive, the size was incorrect, it says 131062mb and both state the same size.

These are just couple of the issues, now I would expect a louder noise going from 200GB to 750GB, but the clicking noise is new and its constant.

Is this normal or something is wrong? Could it be the motherboard on the size issue? I just want to know whether the hard drives are fine or their faulty.

Unless you're using a service packed version of XP (or any version of Vista) then the installer can't create partitions any bigger than that.

Well, I have 2 others hard drives at 200GB, and setup finds them both at around 200GB without a problem.

The setup only finds that amount no more so the partition I have available is the one I use to format and install windows.

I have also got a jumper on the back of the hard drives, could this help? Says 1.7 or 3, could be ghz, gb or sumthing, any ideas?

Microsoft Windows XP Professional - Version 2002.

How about the jumper on the back of the hard drive, saying 1.7 or 3, what's this?

Is it a plain XP CD or does it have any of the Service Packs integrated into it?

The jumper is for setting the SATA interface speed.

No service packs unfortunately...

So you think I should get an up-to-date XP or vista and I won't experience a size issue?

Should I change the hard drive sata interface speed then? - Its currently on default.

You'll need a CD with at least SP1 (preferably SP2, it's less hassle in the long run) integrated onto it to allow you to create a partition larger than 128Gb during the install. You can, of course, apply the service pack after the install and create a second partition in the remaining space should you prefer.

There's no need to change the interface speed.

The jumper is there to allow the drive to be forced to operate at SATA150 on controllers which don't support SATA300. However the drive itself can't sustain transfer rates even close to SATA150 so only the burst rate is affected and this makes next to no difference in real world terms.

Finally installed windows xp, version 2002. Computer only noticing drive at 136gb, is there a way to make it find the original size? or would installing windows service packs find the original size?

What about the noise issue? Are 750GB known to be loud or could there be something wrong with the hard drive?

You have to install the service packs. You can then create a new partition in Admisistration Tools > Disk Management. Or using something like Partition Magic, you can resize the partitions to the full 750gb.
