Had a minor bump last week, which involved me scraping the side and denting the door of an R reg van.

Swapped insurance details and went on my way (was just around the corner from home, so drove it back the last ~100m).

I informed my insurance, who told me my NCD would go down from 3 years to 1.

Now my questions are as follows:

It's possible the van driver wont claim (minimal damage, too much hassle, risk of write-off, etc.). I know he's been using the van as it's been moved a few times, so it's obviously driveable, and the damage is just cosmetic (and tbh it looked pretty beaten up already).

I'm also probably not planning to claim, as my car would be written off (worth ~£900) - given my excess, plus the outstanding premiums they would take out of the payout I would get a minimal amount, so would probably be better of selling the car for spares/repairs.

With this is mind, if neither of us claim - would I be correct in assuming that it wont actually affect my NCD - since no claim has been made? (obviously I would still have to declare the accident!)

Secondly, if he does claim, I might reconsider, since at least that way my insurance will be paid up for the year, but what would happen if they valued the car at less than the excess plus outstanding premiums - would they take the difference via DD?

Cheers oh fountain of OcUK knowledge :D

If a claim is made against your policy they will require all the outstanding monthly payments to be made. If your claiming this ends the policy and would be decuted from your payout, if you done claim you carry on paying as you are as far as i am aware and changes will take effect from next renewal. It might differ from company to company though.
