Question to all in motoring...

I get a car allowance rather than a company car. It is stipulated that I must own a prestige brand such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes or Lexus.

Nope, our company doesn't give them anymore, but a couple of employees still have them because it was in their contracts I believe (or some such reason).

I wouldn't need one anyway unless I started travelling to other sites as part of my work more often, but when I do we just get hire cars

Eligable, except for BMW's, Audi's and imports. Generally speaking I use my own car at the moment as I have had my insurance part paid for, so have to show that I use it..

No company car allowance until a few years after starting as a graduate. Choices are Seat's, VW's and Audi's. Which model depends on your allowance and how much you are personally willing to contribute (which is capped to a percentage of your allowance).

my company has taken the "green" opt out clause for not having company car or allowances... we do have free onsite parking which in Richmond is worth a pretty sum!

the last company i worked for didn't run company cars but gave a car allowance to anyone who might have to go on site...

(both are IT / Web companies)

eligible for car, and take one. New company will give access to Audi or Lexus (on your list, BMW or Merc not allowed apparently its company policy). They say we're allowed any car (petrol or diesel) if we're willing to pay the tax on it.

I'm classed as an essential car user. I get a frixed payment each month (about £80) and then 40p a mile.

That means I am eligabile for a business lease car. I could get a business lease car and that payment would go towards it. However I'd have to add my own contribution, and obviously the better the car, the more I'd have to add to it.

What, a meaningless one?. Any car you want within reason isn't really any car you want, is it.

Sorry, do you want me to list all the ones I could have? I could have an allowance of about £750 a month, which covers most cars 'within reason' but a car to me is just utilitarian transport so I run my own vehicles out of the business and just claim 40p/26p a mile useage instead as its more tax efficient.

I have the option of taking a car up to my allowance or paying an additional part of my wages to "upgrade" to practically any car I want. We can also select from a lot of used cars which are usually one to two years old and you keep them for the remainder of the normal 4 year lease term i.e. Someone has a car and leaves the company after two years his car becomes available and if you take it you keep it for the remaining two years. I have seen M3's and 911's on the list and I know of one exec who got Aston Martin but these would be prohibitive in tax for the plebs like me. Sometimes we get an uplift in car allowance instead of a wage rise so everyone’s allowance is different, right now my allowance would get me to a good spec Focus / Astra / Golf (GT level) without paying anything so I took the money and bought a Z4.
