Hi joining “Be” sick of Virgin Media £18 for 2mb and the fact it is getting worse every night at peek times.

Question what is the advantage of Static IP over Dynamic

And given I’m not to far from the exchange 1.2km and my line suggests I can get 8-16mb what package would you go for

24mb Down 1.3 upload Static for £18
8mb down 1.3 upload Dynamic for £14

What is the expected overheads as they say.

It allows you to offer services over t'internet at a known address, rather than clients ahving to somehow know what address you've been allocated, or go through something like dyndns.

For bog standard web use it doesnt really offer anything.

Yup if your not hosting a service like a webpage or game server or any number of other services that are more convenient if located at a fixed address then you dont need static ip.

It can be very handy if you want to remotely access your pc as you dont need to use any of the workarounds a dynamic ip requires.

Theres no harm in having a single static IP either and its usually a doddle to set up.
