Questions about computer theft........!

who is edward snowden?
my logic is good people won't think of trying my bank pin because they know banks cannot be hacked into!

I use my bank pin for my windows password, banks can't get hacked so my windows wont get hacked either.

If your PIN is just 4 numbers, I would have thought that this would be the easiest password to break via brute force, right? Though my experience with security and encryption is basically zero, brute force is essintially trying every possible permutation of characters, correct? A short string of numbers obviously wouldn't take very long to crack.

Just a thought. Again, I know nothing!

am i missing something? i got told by a mate that it will be fine and he told me why, banks just can't be hacked and my banks never been hacked into so its the most secure password i could use.

It's not about somebody finding your password from the bank.

A brute force attack (ie trying all combinations until you find the right one) on a 4 digit password consisting of only numbers will take seconds as the number of combinations are so small.

You're missing a lot, banks can be hacked they're not magically impenetrable but their resistance to hacking isn't down to the fact they use a 4 digit PIN.

So bitlocker is a pretty decent alternative to TrueCrypt?

I dont have a TPM module, I assume password wise is OK? Also does it have the pre-boot option of entering the password when you encrypt the local OS drive? (recall TrueCrypt having this option, just before Windows boot).

Depends which operating system.

On Windows 7 / Windows 8 you need to change group policy to allow it without TPM.

With Windows 7 you need to backup your keys to a USB key and then start with the USB key attached - simply take it away and job done.

With Windows 8 you can do the password though I think you still have to store the keys on USB storage you don't need them connected to boot.
