OK, I'm definitely going to buy a widescreen mointor and was thinking of about 20", but as there are a lot of monitors coming out in this sort of range I wanted to seek some advice first, so please bear with me here:

1) Of the 20" Philips, Dell, Belinea, NEC and Viewsonic monitors, which do you think offers the best value for money? I intend to use the monitor for all round purposes, including gaming and watching films. Based purely on what I've read and seen, so far I prefer the Dell, Philips and Viewsonic (although I have a XV912 and I'm not a fan of the stand - I prefer lower set screens).

2) Can the 2005FPW pivot vertically like the 2405FPW, so I can play games in TATE mode?

3) How good is the image quality through the composite and s-video inputs on the Dell? Need to know as the ones on my current Samsung aren't too great and if they don't give a good image then I'll just go far DVI/VGA

Thanks

1) Of the 20" Philips, Dell, Belinea, NEC and Viewsonic monitors, which do you think offers the best value for money? Based purely on what I've read and seen, so far I prefer the Dell, Philips and Viewsonic (although I have a XV912 and I'm not a fan of the stand - I prefer lower set screens).

1. not sure about the others but this dell screen is fantastic, are your eyes surceptable to ghosting? i.e can you see ghosting on 16ms screens, i can't on this but if you can then get one of the newer panels... you can set the screen however you like it , including almost on the desk, ace stand.

2. it sure can mate, if you want to? not sure i would.

3. used it for my digital camera in composite, what are you using it for? i'd definatly say go dvi if you can. image quality is acceptable through composite but not as good as dvi.

hope this helps you mate:)

This monitor is great. we bought one for a system at work. only had 1 problem with it, but easily rectified - we couldnt get the display to go into widescreen modes, so downloaded the latest graphics card drivers (it was on an intel built in in graphics card)

Thanks for the response guys - I might just go for the Dell over the over 20" monitors. And sorry about the double post...pressed quote instead of edit by mistake.

I was going to use the composite for gaming via older consoles, but I could buy
a VGA box.

As for ghosting my current Samsung is also 16ms and ghosting doesn't seem too bad on that. I'm not the "go up to a wall and pan the camera really quick to see if there's any blurring" type. ;)

No ghosting here m8, with my 2005FWP :)

oh, just one more thing. Is there a button on the bezel to switch between DVI, VGA, composite and s-video or do you need to enter the monitor's menu?

thanks

This monitor *does* ghost.

Whether you notice or not is the question.

I own one and even travelled to London to see one someone else on the forum owns to check it wasn't just mine.

This is not an opinion it is a fact.

Like I said though, it depends on how sensitive you are to it.

Other facts to consider;

The monitor is susceptable to image burn, this is not incurable but annoying.
The monitor suffers from bad backlighting.
The monitor comes from a company who have no concept of customer care or any way of telling their backside from their elbow (but hey Dell - thanks for not replying to my court claim against you - I got awarded the lot).

wow, that's some pretty bad backlighting
You wont notice it other than at boot-up time, or if you play dark games (Doom / FEAR / Splinter Cell / Space Sims / Flight Sims), or if you watch DVD's with a black border.
