Newbie Question but I am contemplating whether its worth taking the plunge into the world of Mac's.

Will be going on to do a Garden Design Degree in September and I am already designing a lot of things electronically using AutoCAD, Sketch Up & Photoshop on my current course using Windows PC's (Which so far are sufficient enough).

Basically what I wanted to know was if the Mac Mini (Top Spec'd one with: Quad Core, 8GB ram, 2 x 500GB 7200rpm HDD's and intel's HD graphics 3000) would be better for this type of design than my PC (See specs below)? I've no experience with Mac's before but my lecturer keeps telling me how great they are for design, which intruiged me about getting one.

I would only consider getting a Mac if it was superiorly beneficial for designing using mainly the programs I listed above and had better "ease of use".

I was looking specifically at the Mac mini because I already have a 23" IPS monitor and dont really see myself needing another in the form of an iMac. The Macbook pro's look nice but are probably too expensive for Price to performance ratio for me, and i am not sure how capable they are? Also would the graphics cards/chips be suitable enough in the Mac Mini for this type of design?

Is it worth it?

I'd say it's a matter of preference, you current rig is more than capable for what you need.

Also how do you know that you will actually like working on a Mac computer, have you got any experience using a Mac? It's a different experience that using a Win7 computer.

Personally I use both but I prefer using Windows 7, especially when dealing with multiple windows, applications etc all at the same time, I just find it easier to multi manage with Windows OS.

Definitely not worth it going from that spec PC imo.

In my opinion you would regret it immensely, after all going to the mac mini wouldn't open up anything in terms of software.

You can design as much on a PC as you can on a MAC, the software is available on both OS, so just personal pref of what OS you prefer.

Thanks for feedback guys, I've never used a mac so I wouldn't know if i would eventually get on with it or not. I guess the wise thing to do would be to just stick with what I have and save the money for upgrades to current rig.

Indeed. A mac is no better for 'design' or any of the 'creative' stuff than a windows machine these days. Unless you specifically want some of the OSX exclusive software, like Final Cut, Aperture, Logic, etc.
