Questions about online check-in

So I'm not a frequent flyer but I'll be heading off to Greece soon, however, I've booked a slightly earlier return flight than my friends so I'll be on my own for the journey back.

Question 1: I'm wondering how online check-in works regarding baggage tags? I'm able to check in on my phone, receive an electronic boarding pass and select my seat. However, I'm unsure how I go about receiving my baggage tags to attach to my suitcase?

Do I just go up to the same kiosks I could have checked in at anyway and get one from there? Or is there another way to go about this?

Question 2: I've lost the debit card I originally booked the ticket on. I rang them up and the lady didn't provide much clarity as to what the procedure is but basically said the chances are you won't be asked for it. She asked if I have any documentation from the bank stating the card is lost, but all I have is a few letters from the bank saying 'this is your new card...'.

In case they do ask, I've printed my e-statement out that covers the period in which I bought the ticket. Additionally, I've included the letters relating to the new card.

Is there anything else I should bring/do to ensure the lost card isn't a problem?

When I've been in this kind of position in the past they wanted actual bank headed paper i.e. the actual statement from the bank (which my bank was kind of difficult about providing :| ) rather than a print out on generic A4.

You might be able to get the bank/provider to provide some kind of paperwork to prove the replacement of the card though.

If you have 2 forms of id (one photo based) and a bill under the same name and address as the missing card that should be enough aslong as the replacement card is under the same name and account number.

That's the thing really, I fly out tomorrow and didn't think about the whole lost card thing until tonight when I was looking over everything for the final time.

I have two forms of ID though my bills are all electronic as well, in fact, I can't remember the last time I received a paper bill. I do have two letters with my address on relating to the new card which are from the bank itself but they don't explicitly state my previous card was lost, just information relating to the new card (ie, instructions on how to use).

Fingers crossed they won't ask for it (as the lady I spoke to said it's unlikely they would) and if they do, I hope what I do have will suffice.

Having flown numerous times, I've never been asked for a debit card ever at checkin. It's paid for already, why would they.

You check your bags in at the cheque in as normal, checking in online if you have hold luggage is really only useful to speed the process up/book seats.

What this guy said. :D

Online check-in is really so that you can book/confirm seats and confirm that you're planning to fly on your ticket. If you have baggage to drop off, you'll still need to go up to a check-in desk, show ID, and have the luggage weighed and tagged. They may be dedicated "bag drop off" desks that you can use, if the airline that you're flying with has those available.

Many people travel short(er) distances/durations without any hold luggage. Those people can check-in online and proceed straight to security without needing to stop by the check-in desks.

Why would they ask to see the payment card? What if the ticket had been bought on your behalf by someone else? If you've checked in online look for the bag drop-off desk, if there isn't one just go to a normal desk and ask to check in you bag.

Print boarding pass/Use e-boarding pass.

Go to usual check in desks to check bags in and get luggage tags, show boarding pass there, you won't need a debit card if you've already printed your boarding pass.

Go through security.

Done :)

Not heard of this procedure of showing the card you purchased your flights with. Isn't this normally just used when picking up purchased tickets (I.e. Concert tickets). Just find the bag drop queue and give your booking reference along with your passport. You won't need luggage tags either, they'll stick the correct tagging on the bag.

Normally isn't needed but if something does go wrong its the simplest and easiest way of sort it usually.

Also, check to see if your credit/debit card gives you executive lounge privileges, we got this with a joint Barclays account. It's called Dragons Pass, if you are entitled you have to sign yourself up. There's an app for it (iirc they do physical cards but it takes a while to get them). As a frequent traveller I do appreciate my free pastries, beer and nice calm lounge :)

I have never had to show any form of payment details?

I once checked in online and could not print my e-ticket, still was fine when i dropped my bags off at the check in desks.

Know a couple of people who've reaped the rewards of that when their flight has been delayed.

You check in online.
get your boarding pass printed or on your mobile phone.
you turn up at the airport and head to the bag drop for your airline.
show them the boarding pass and passport.
put your bag on the belt, the person attaches a tag to your bag.
you head to the security gate.
put all your electronics, any items with metal on your person, anything in your pockets and your coat in the trays.
show them your boarding pass and passport.
walk through the metal detector and collect your gear.

walk in to the departures terminal and wait for your flights boarding gate to be announced.
head to the gate and show our boarding pass and then wait again until you board your plane.

at the other end you get off the flight, head to the toilet and then the baggage carousel for your flight. don't rush to it because it takes a good 15-20 minutes before bags start to appear anyway.
