so my sister started working a few months back for a subway

shes 16, now the problems are shes doing 8-10hours a day & sometimes in excess of 200hours a month

she starts work at 6am ish most days & as with the busses etc round here has to get up at 4 ish to be at her work place for 6

shes on £4.95 a hour which i think is unreasonable, but what topped it off today was the fact that she just told me shes working boxing day for ......... you guessed it £4.95 tarting at 6:30 and finishing at 2:30, theres also no busses so a taxi at £35 each way is the only option for her

ive rung up and spoke to the glorified manager who thinks he owns everyone including me and i havnt even met him and all i got was "if she doesnt like it she can leave, if she doesnt want the shift ill sack her & we dont like parents family etc to get involved" and he slammed the phone down, hes been the same with my mum, dad, nannan etc

whats mine/her options ? in dealing with said manager and aiding her get it all sorted

he seems to be inoring all legal guidelines from what ive seen on the tinterweb, would it be beneficial going to the shop and confronting him about it ?

£4.95 an hour on Boxing Day?! :o As you've already no doubt worked out, her day's "wages" won't even cover the taxi there, never mind there and back. Sod that.

If she's not on contract yet there's not a lot she can do, but either way - recession or not - my two word answer to the 'manager' would end in "you"

Personally I wouldnt get involved. Its your sisters problem, I can see why he said he doesnt want family getting involved.

check direct.gov.uk for working limits at different ages.

"Mmmmm I'll have a sub of the day please"

"Would you like that toasted?"

"Could you get the manager please I'm not very happy"

"Erm OK"

"Hello Mr Manager"

"Thwack"

"That was just for being rude on the phone"

"You are also lucky my Nana didn't come in you jumped up little bitch!"

£4.95 an hour is a good wage fora 16 year old for a start.........seems very little to us now but its a lot more than most places will pay at that age!

also, it's not illegal for the employer to make her work a bank holiday, nor are they obliged to pay more for it (my employer doesnt). It's not very nice especially given the limited transport but at the end of the day it's a business and not all managers give a ****.

Has she finished school? If so, then there are no different laws with regards to working time limits, but if she is still in school there are plenty (not before 7am not after 7pm and not during school hours etc)

I hope you can get it all sorted, but there is nothing i can see legally that is problematic?

Tom.

Go above his head if you can find out who the area manager is and make a complaint about it.

As for boxing day, get her to phone in sick with food poisoning etc.

Speak to your CAB.

Do not go to the shop if by "confront" you mean "punch in the mouth" :)

speak about what? she chose the job, no laws are seemingly being broken, what do you want to be done?

They are mostly franchises though so he can do what he likes really as long as he isn't breaking any rules

My option is still the best

£4.95 is average/good from what i have experienced with people my age. I am personally on £5.50 an hour and work 11 hoursish a week whilst at college. During the holidays i will work up to 25ish hours a week.
