Hey guys.

I have a 780TI classy and ive been offered a 780ti classy kingpin edition from a friend of mine as he is wanting to upgrade.

Am I right in thinking I can sli these cards but the kingpin would be slightly downclocked to match the classys speed??

Any help or advice

Cheers

Reason for asking as I'm wanting to hold off buying a 980ti as I'm wanting a new higher res monitor but wanted to make sure I have plenty of grunt to do it justice

No they would both boost independently of one another, depending on the power limits and temps.

There will be more heat build up in case obviously, so you may need to adjust fan speeds to be able to maintain the level of boost/ overclock you previously had.

So does that mean its a no go then? Not played with sli for a good few years now

It will work fine (to the extent that SLI ever "works"), it is just that with the 2 cards have the 'open' coolers, which vent the air inside the case, meaning that temps will increase somewhat - perhaps lessened if your case has very good cooling.

As for them potentially having different clocks, it will make no difference. It is just that the maximum boost clocks attainable are different from card to card (even for 2 exact cards from same manufacturer) due to differences in the silicon.

Make no mistake, SLI is fantastic when it works. It gives incredible levels of performance. The problem is when a game doesn't support SLI and you are left with all this wasted GPU horsepower sitting idle. Some games actually perform worse with SLI enabled. Watch_Dogs was a fairly high profile recent'ish example.

The other thing you have to consider with 780Ti SLI is the VRAM. 3GB is fine for the settings you would ordinarily use with a single GPU. The minute you add the 2nd GPU with the additional horsepower available, the temptation is to crank up settings or increase resolution (using DSR). Doing so will often increase VRAM usage towards the 3GB limitation of the cards. The Ti's are great cards. I would still be rocking my 2, without a doubt if not for the fact that most modern games have seen VRAM usage rocket.

I beg to differ here folks. I ran 780Ti in SLI for 2 years and they would not boost indpendently. They ran at the speed of the slowest card. They were both the same make and brand though so it didn't matter much as they were very similar performers.

I'm now running 980Ti in SLI, again same make and brand, and again they both run at the speed of the slightly slower one, unless I add a small boost to the core in Afterburner.

I don't know if this is how it *should* be or not, but it's what I've discovered and in Afterburner I've tried it with the "synchronsie settings for similar graphics processors" both on and off, and no difference.

Also, I would not SLI two ACX cooler type cards - Temps will be awful.
I use a DIY H55 / bracket AIO watercooling solution for both cards (when I had 780Ti's and now for the 980Ti's) and after lots of time and effort my temps, noise levels, and performance are truly stunning.

They'll run games great when sli is supported. You'll have to make concessions with the graphics settings for the ram limit with some titles, But the difference will be negligible 99% of the time so it won't lessen the experience. Great gaming days ahead.

Ah yes there is an option in afterburner (and i assume other similar apps) to sync similar graphics processors. It isn't entirely neccesary though I don't think. Again, been over a year since I had my SLI set up so perhaps am remembering incorrectly.

Cheers chaps.

I'm gonna grab it then. No need to worry about temps as they both have EK blocks on them so will be nice and cool.

Gonna sound a fool here but what's dsr?
