I'm going off on an extended trip to india later this year and currently have a lowepro backpack that I've been very happy with. However, I need something that is easier to access in a hurry and also something thats water-proof just in case I get caught in some sort of monsoon!?

Is anyone able to make any suggestions?

Kevin

lowepro do the slingshot range and i am sure they are waterproof. They are just like the one strapped back packs that you can swing under your arm and just pull out the camera- i think the 100 is a bit small but the 200 and 300 bags are okay

Yeah, Lowepro Slingshots are very easy to access because you don't have to take them off your back to get to the contents. They have a pull-out waterproof cover which will protect from the rain and should also hide the zips from any thieving fingers.

In terms of capacity, my slingshot 200 happily holds my D200, 18-70, 70-300, 150 macro, ringflash and assorted filters/holders/cards. Still have room for another lens as well.

Thanks for all the advice - i'll check out the slingshot range! As for making sure it stays secure - I wasn't planning on leaving it open!

Kev

That slingshot sounds cool :)

I'm only pointing out the thieving problem because people don't seem to realise how skilled thieves have become.

As an example, my parents just got back from their 2 week holiday where my mum had her handbag with all their passports in, mobile phones, money, credit cards, keys etc etc etc. Stolen from between her legs whilst the four of them were in a restaurant eating a meal together.

Ruined their holiday :(

No matter how secure you think something is, some **** will figure out a way to bum you.

ThinkTank Digital Holster series. Im getting a Digital Holster 50 to attach to the waistband of my camera rucksack for quick access to the camera.

I just got back from Rome with a slingshot 200 and there was no danger of someone getting it off me without me noticing. If they opened it you would feel tugging (due to weight) or stuff would fall out = noise.

Saw some people getting pickpocketed because they were walking along with their bags open and looking up into the sky. To far away to alert but suffice to say I was keeping an already highly alerted eye on my stuff after seeing that.

If you have any sense you will generally be fine although there are always exceptions.

I use a Slingshot 100, good bag for what i need to take with me at one time.

Takes;

D40 + Lens attached

Space for two more inside the actual area, and if needed 1 at the top.

Normally i take:

D40, 18-55, 55-200, memorycard reader, spare SD's, filters, phone, ipod, lens hoods.

which of the slingshot will be able to carry my 400d + battery grip and say a 300mm telephoto?

My AW200 fits a D200, 70-300, 150 macro (similar size to the telephoto). 18-70, sigma ringflash, loads of filters, charger, cards etc and still has room for one more lens.

The battery grip might make things trickier though.

The battery grip can always be stowed seperately i guess. I think the 300 version might be starting to get a little on the big side with my limited kit. However i have to consider upgrades in the future- maybe a bigger body (a big if).

My 200aw holds a D80 + grip with 55-200 attached and hood on, A D40 with sigma 10-20 attached with hood on but reversed, flashgun, a 50mm f/1.8 and the 18-55 kit lens. Thats with the bag in its default layout, which means the D80 + 55-200 is the only thing available via quick access. You have to take the bag off and open it up to get the D40 etc out. The outside two compartments are holding a ton of accessories too.
