Hi currently sat in a car park behind a car that hit mine and drove off... Checked the video footage and followed the car and now waiting for the person to return..

They haven't done much damaged just scratched my rear panel. What is the best course of action? What is the punishment for hit and run?

Call the police, failing to exchange insurance details is a crime.

If they dont turn up at least they will give you a incident number that may help take things forward with insurance.

ditto call 999 now.

Its a criminal offence to leave the scene of an accident without leaving details

what else has the person got to hide ? they could be un-insured, un taxed, drunk or all sorts.

Well 30 mins later I'm still waitin for them to return... They hit
my car at 3.10... The camera shows them getting out checking there car checking my car then driving off and there bumper is very badly damaged... My car isn't so bad though... Will the police really be bothered? I don't want to get insurance involved because it will just raise my premium.

you will have to involve your insurance regardless so quit worrying about that. You simoly cant just sue him or something.

God, he may not even have insurance and you'll have to pursue him through the courts for some meagre ammount.

And yes the police will be interested, he comitted an offence, he could also be comitting a much more severe one if he drove off.

So what are you waiting for, a cash settlement from them??

You have a duty to inform your insurers or they could well claim you hit them!

I would take photos of their car, check its leagility as best you can, tyres/tax etc and go to your local police station.

Well back home now and I got the ladies details and will try and do as dogbreath suggested and claim direct from the third party. She came back to car I got out mine and as she looked at me she started shaking and then began crying before I even said anything. It was a middle-aged lady and she then began sobbing and saying she paniced and was so sorry. I took her details and will try and claim direct if she doesn't want to pay I will just leave it. No point in claiming of insurance will only raise my premium. I didn't report to police either as can't be bothered with the hassle. I know this isn't the right thing to do but if we look at it from a different angle she could argue that she planned to come back and leave details and the law does state that she has to pass on the details in a reasonable time.

thoughts and opinions welcome but i think i took best course of action or maybe i just wussed out cus it was a crying little women and i'm a big strong man lol.

just hope she doesnt have a husband who when he hears about this gets her to change her story and completely twist it and refuse to admit liability

I've seen it happen before :(

Best of luck claiming on her insurance, with any luck it was a genuine she panicked and knows she did the wrong thing, and will admit as much to the insurnance co :)
