Hey guys,

can anyone please click on this link and let me know if they can access the page from an external address, it's just a little gallery I'm working on while getting some Apache/PHP experience.

Once I get a reply I'll take the link down, I don't like leaving my IP address floating around. **EDIT: Address taken down, thanks Una :)

Thanks!

PS: Oh and how would one go about registering an IP address as a domain name, for example if I wanted to register it as www.shanecgfx.com. Do I just have to give them the correct IP address?

I know it's probably easier to just rent a host server but I wanted to look into running an apache server off my own machine, and I know my IP address isn't static so it will most likely change every few days but these are problems I can work on :)

ShaneC Graphics, works.

Ok, well.. you need to add DNS records to your nameserver for that domain name. If you don't control the nameserver for the domain you will need to ask your hosting provider if they will do it for you or use dyndns or something similar.

Sorry, I just knew an Una that was a girl, assumed. Oh well, it's the internet, you can just say you're a girl from now on.

Haha no worries, was just joking... get it all the time :p

To answer your DNS thing in more detail. The problem is your dynamic IP address and the time it takes DNS records to propagate through the system. There are providers which offer you domain name -> ip addresses for dynamic ips (dyndns.com / http://freedns.afraid.org/). afraid.org might be worth a shot actually looks like dyndns charge you for your own domain name now.

You got to bare in mind the security implications of giving control of your dns to a third party mind.

That was a lot easier then I thought it would be! Thanks mate!!

EDIT: btw I am using a program called FreeDNS update to update the IP address regularly to the website. It's just a little program that runs minimised in the background.
