Hi guys,

Our boiler went down around the same time last year and we had a new PCB board fitted. It's now got the exact same fault nearly a year on. My question is, if the same part has failed again would it be covered by any sort of warranty?

Could really do without paying again... Cost me £300 last year :(.

Thanks

Probably something blowing the PCB rather than the PCB its self if it keeps going, yes you should be able to get a replacement FOC

perhaps but I very much doubt it. Often in situations like this the engineer will sell the board back to the company that he brought it from and they will fix it so it can be used again in another repair at least that what my electrical engineering friend was leading me to believe the other week. Its win win for the company since most of the time the customer is paying for the new board and then he get more money from the sale of the old one.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I'll have to phone the guy tomorrow to clarify it. Last year the electric tripped and blew the oven and coincidently the boiler. It just so happens that we had a power cut recently while some electrical work was being carried out :(

Always makes me laugh that a pcb that has about 6 tasks to do costs more than a top end motherboard. Should still be under warranty if it's less than a year old.

I had a glow worm boiler in my last house that used to blow a PCB every winter. It was only 3 years old and after the first time glow worm used to replace it every time for free.

Better to buy a decent boiler like Valiant, you get a 5 or 7 year warranty, daft spending out £300 every year or so.

It easy to say buy a new boiler and I agree, it probably would be the best idea if we had the money but we really don't. This is our first house and we are looking to move out soon to a new home so spending a lot on a new one wouldn't really benefit us (that might selfish but we really can't afford a new boiler for somebody else).

I would have thought all electrical items would have had a year warranty at least? It's not really my fault that the part failed (providing it is said part).

I phoned the guy today but he hasn't picked up yet :(

Thanks

Ring the boiler manufacturer. They make the parts. Not your boiler maintenance man.

A tip about pcbs is. Never turn the mains off to the boiler. It can overload it every time it's turned back on for the first time.

will not be covered under warranty. nearly all pcb's are made by 3rd parties and not the boiler manufacturer.

still haven't told us what boiler as there a few which are famous for popping pcb's?!

Surely the third party company providing the part as a new part would require it to be fit for 12months under the sales of good act?

I understand the warranty isn't technically with him but he purchased it on our behalf so he dealt with the supplier, not us. If we rang the supplier (which we can't because who knows where he ordered it from) then they wouldn't have any record of dealing with us as they haven't.

The boiler is a baxi solo I think. I'll have to take the cover off the fine out the exact model. It's relatively old I think.

contact your fitter but dont blame him once he tells you their is no one year guarantee.

what if something else on your boiler has a fault causing the pcb to pop or a general electrical problem in your home has caused it, thats the question the supplier will be thinking about when you ask for another free pcb..

this is why they dont give out any guarantee.. pcb's are not returnable..

Turns out the whole boiler is Knackered and there is a crack in the water tank upstairs. We've been told to upgrade to a combi.

We received a quote for £2100 all in. Seem fair?

just had a Vaillant ecotec 28 pro fitted for £1650, with a magnaclean filter.

You can barter with plumbers, that quote started at £1900

Just as an aside, the warranties on parts are normally covered by the retailer, they get the parts at pretty low prices, which puts the onus on them to support the end user (ie your fitter).

They then send the faulty parts back to the manufacturer for a credit if its still in warranty. The majority of boiler manufacturers do not make any of their own components, maybe apart from the casings!
