Quick clean and temps have improved by 8-9 degrees but..

Just goes to show how a quick ten minute clean and application of AS5 goes some way to improving temps.

I've got a 5850 with stock cooler @ at 850/1100 and my idle temps were in the region of 60 degrees, now it is reading 51. Still seems high maybe? It is quite warm in here though.

I've got a small funky case (reasonable airflow however) and I did have about half the fan blocked by the nearest pci card - but I couldn't see a huge difference by removing this. I think it's more the application of AS5 and a quick dust. What do you think?

I noticed with the new drivers that when overclocking the idle clocks have risen a lot. This has made the temps rise by at least 10 degrees than if the clocks were at default. So to about 50 degrees for me as well.

But I changed back to 10.4s which allow me to overclock and keep the power saving clocks.

Yes, last few cats have increased idle clocks, so it'll be warmer. I've an 5830 at stock with a VF3000 aftermarket cooler and my idle temps are 45deg in an antec 902 case, fully fitted with decent fans in every slot. If i change to 10.2, they are down to about 37 deg. :o

It's super nice. I wouldnt have said it was any quieter than my stock powercolour cooler, but the cooling performance is far superior at the same levels, so you can leave it on the lowest setting and it is around the same volume as about 35% on a stock cooler, and you dont get the horrible increase/decrease of speed when playing games etc. Ideally however, you need a case fan on the side panel exhausting the warm air out of the case as the heat dissapation isn't as directive as the factory coolers.

My 5850 idles at 39-41c with the Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo Pro and is still silent. That is with latest drivers and with decent case cooling - three silent 200mm fans in the CM Sniper chassis.

I've got a Silverstonetek matx case with exhaust vents on the side, and an intake and exhaust 80mm fan combination above the cards on a support. There's reasonable airflow all things considered. However, I think part of my original problem was the fact I had covered over almost half of the 5850 fan shroud with a pci x-fi. Stupid design! So I'm going to sell the x-fi and purchase a Xonar pcie I think (fancy a change). Then I would have killed two birds with one stone.

I'm not sure what 5850 cooler to go for though. I fancy that Zalman, but i really want something that offers me near silence (well, best of both worlds really) - so maybe the AC is the way to go?

My 5870 idles at 25-30 degrees depending on room temp. Its an Asus EAH5870, original version with the stock cooler. I took off the cooler and applied Arctic MX-3 but other than that no alterations.

GPU-z puts the fan at 38%.

This morninig is better - 49 idle at the mo, but the system has not been on that long. Either way, I ordered another cooler for it, so things will improve. I just hope it isn't any louder!
