Are these things any good?

Abit out of the loop now I've stopped custom building and gone fully Apple :o *shock horror*

ASUS Maximus Formula SE motherboard- X38 chipset
Intel Quad Core Q8300 -> Q6600 better?
*Removed*
eVGA GeForce 9800 GT 512 -> A Hmmm from me.

My brother is trying to compile a computer upgrade, say a spec for CPU, Mobo, Mem and GPU for £300?

PSU is a 4 year old OCZ 580W which should be enough to take on what he can afford tbh.

Ideas?

Also avoid the STORM SILENT 900W PSU!!

This is what I would look at getting:

AMD Phenom II X3 720 ~ £100

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=cp-238-am

asus m4a77d ~ £60

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=mb-376-as&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1482

has all solid capacitors and supports 140w phenom ii processors too

4gb 1066mhz ddr2 ~ £71

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=my-192-cs&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=817

hd4770 512mb ~ £74

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=gx-117-pc&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=

the total comes to around £305 excluding postage.

the x3 720 is similar to a £133 q8400 in games:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/default.aspx?p=83&p2=89

the x3 720 compared to a core i3 530:

http://en.inpai.com.cn/doc/enshowcont.asp?id=7488

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/default.aspx?p=118&p2=83

there is not much difference between using ddr2 and ddr3 with the current phenom ii processors:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/phenom-x4-955,2278-3.html

The HD4770 is faster than an 9800GT:

http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=700&type=expert&pid=4

Many of the cheaper 9800GT cards are downclocked versions which are bus powered.

Also socket 939 X2 processors usually reach a good price on a certain well known auction site.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=my-192-cs&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=817

Thanks, need a GPU in there too tho.

So it seems AMD is the performance for price king at the moment!

Cheers

I got a nice cheap Gerforce 9600 GSO which does the job on games playing them near max + phyx is quite nice, if not that for the ati 4850.

Since the Phenom II X2 550BE is based on the Phenom II X4 quad core over 70% of them in this thread have been unlocked to triple and quad cores:

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=227004

This is not guaranteed though!

CAT's listing includes all the items you requested and it's always luck of the draw with the 550BE so would be a bonus on top as well. :)
