hi, i have a quick CPU Frequency Scaling monitor question...

should i set my cpu to performance, or keep it on demand? i have a funny feeling my laptop is running a lot slower than it should do (800mhz rather than 2.00ghz), but i dont wanna damage my pocessor by putting it on performance constantly. will i damage my cpu by changing this setting and putting it on performance?

Unless your laptop's cooling fans are rubbish (or you have a habit of runnning your lappy on the carpet), I wouldn't worry about it. The main reason for the "on-demand" scheme is to conserve battery, not extend the life of your processor.

I have mine set for performance whilst plugged in and on-demand when running on batteries. You tend to find that Windows boxes are configured the same.

it will run as fast as it needs to. If you have it running at performance it will spend most of it's time doing nothing. But it'll do nothing very fast. If you have it the other way it'll still spend most of it's time doing nothing, but it'll do it slower, and therefore use less power, make less heat and your battery will last longer.

The CPU will flit up to 2.0 Ghz if needs to instantly (in human terms)... Trying playing a h264 movie (or something CPU intensive like that) to see the effect!!

Modern CPU transistors will use very little energy when fully OFF or ON. Every time they switch they will draw current. By reducing the frequency of switching you reduce the energy requirements of the CPU. (Additionally the core voltage may be dynamically reduced as this has a square law relationship with wattage).

okay thanks for the replies guys :) what i'll do is set it to full power on mains, and conservative on battery. for some reason it was set to conservative even on mains lol.
