Quick CPU Temp Problem

CPU Temp Problem - 82 C +

EDIT: Playing L4D just now - according to SpeedFan my CPU just reached 89 C. HELP! Why didn't the computer shutdown?! Are these readings accurate?

The system has been suddenly turning off during games lately - turns out CPU is temp is high.

Just replaced thermal paste to if it helped and... kinda. Idling now at just over 30 C.

max cpu temp was set in bios at 72 C but it now rises steadily, when playing, until it rises well above the 72 to 82-85 C. No sudden turn off now. Why?

Also, why is it so damn hot? Never use to be.

stock. CPU is AMD xp3800+

EDIT: Can you install the heatsink incorrectly? ie. wrong way round? On the hs - on one side there is the lever mechanism and on the other there isn't. does orientation matter? (lever top or bottom of cpu)

Just took the whole heatsink assembly (fan, clips, etc) apart and cleaned and reseated with new paste (for the 3rd time today) and .... max core temp = 46 C (playing L4D)
