Have a 5870, thinking of adding a second for crossfire, now does it need to just be any old 5870 or should it be the exact same card i.e. my Gigabyte 5870.

Also it is presumeably safe to do this on a 1000W PSU?

1000W will be more than ample, I don't think it needs to be the exact same card, they are all reference designs anyway so they should be the same.

Any brand HD 5870 will work fine. Though I wouldn't pay extra money for a factor overclocked card, as it will only run as fast as the slower card.

As for the power supply a good quality 750W would be fine, so as long as your 1000W is good quality then you shouldn't have any issues. May I ask what make and model the PSU is?

Also, you obviously need a motherboard that supports crossfire and ideally one that runs the two main slots at PCIE v2.0 x8/x8 speed or faster.

it is a cooler master, cant remember model, real power M1000 i think. it is about 3 years old now so i dont think you can get it anymore.

the motherboard is the gigabyte x58a-ud3r which i'm pretty sure can handle crossfire. just thought it was cheaper then buying a new graphics card

Good stuff - that PSU will be absolutely fine. Was just checking it wasn't a £40 "1000W" thing that enjoys exploding when you try to draw some decent current from it.

As for the motherboard - indeed that board will be great in crossfire, both lanes running at x16 speed. You are quite right that adding a second HD 5870 is by far the best value option for upgrading your graphics performance.

Yeah when I built the original spec I really maxed out on the PSU, think it was about £200 at the time.

Excellent - so just any stock 5870 will do for this?

Cheers again

Yes, even if you buy an overclocked card it will (should) down-clock to the lowest clocked cards speeds. Just buy the cheapest 5870 you can find.
