Can anyone recommend a quick and easy (and free) way to backup my ESXi 5.1 config so that I can re-install on a smaller USB stick and restore all the settings? It would also be useful to put something in place for disaster recovery (e.g. if the USB stick fails).

Be gentle, still a bit of a n00b at this :)

Cheers!

It can be done using scripts and command line (you could even clone the USB stick).

However i'd argue that for the length of time it will take to backup and restore it's probably not worth the bother, as it doesn't retain any of your virtual machine configurations and a basic ESXi single host install takes 15 odd minutes.

Perhaps you actually want to backup your virtual machines and their configuration? If so you can use something like ghettovcb.

It's really only for the host, the VMs are ok. I'll give it a go, installing fresh on a new USB stick and see what happens. I'm guessing it will find/see the existing VMFS and the VMs on it, or will I need to import things?
