hi i am just reading over some articles and came across the phrase the euros appreciation by 9 per cent against the us dollar. what does this mean - i am confused by the against. is it that one dollar would get more euros now as the euro is strengthening or the other way around? always get confused by this.

cheers

Euro, it's euro, not euros! Euro is simply a shorter version of Europe, it's one europe, we don't have many europes! It's like saying, £6 can buy you 10bottles of waters, it doesn't make sence! Anyway, here you go.

Currency depreciation

A decline in the value of one currency relative to another currency. Depreciation occurs when, because of a change in exchange rates, a unit of one currency buys fewer units of another currency.

So in English this means that because of a change in exchange rates, one euro can now buy 9cents more.

The currency is called the Euro. More than one Euro = Euros, like pounds.

Its tough **** if you greasy mainlanders don't do vowels, should we sign in ( ;) ) we're bringing our grammar with us! :D
