Right now I have quite a few fans in my case. I was wondering if it's safe to unplug them whilst the computer is running? I think they are all plugged in via the 4 pin sockets, rather than going into the mobo.

If I could play about with them whilst the comp is running I could figure out which are the noisiest ones :)

I've done it in the past but I've heard of people killing stuff by plugging/unplugging fans when the PC is on.

Probably safe enough though.

I've done the same for years, checking fans on 4pin connectors and m/b when running and never had a problem.

I don't do it while windows is running, just in the bios screen.

I unplug most things whilst my PC is running, not including HDD obviously. ive shorted out my PC (turned off and rebooted) about 15 times and ive had no problems (this was due to accidental shorting, normally whilst drunk).
If you follow this and burn your house down then dont come moaning to me (thats if your still alive).

wont it be better just to stop them one by one with your finger (press the middle but dont go for the fins :p )

I unplugged dvd drive and then tried to plug it in again and sparked and shutdown. Nothing broken and guess it was tagans circuitry that prevented it but fans use less current and only plug into 12v rail rather than both 12 and 5

I once plugged in a fan into my fan controller when it was on. It blew up that port on the fan controller, but luckily the fan (which cost more than the controller) was fine. That was the only time out of many but i've learnt to not do it again :p
