Actually this is worse then a power cut. During a power cut (which we've had a lot of recently) at least all of my housemates come down and we play boardgames by candle light. I've resorted to watching crappy Saturday night TV now.

Usually 24 hours (sometimes 2 hours).

I run my own caching DNS locally though so it ain't going down for me.
