That's really not the point - the idea is to make the game as portable as possible. It's turning it into an installation-free, web-based application that can be played from any PC where there's a net connection.

Incorrect.

Some servers have strict_auth set to zero, which means that the serial isn't checked, but not all.

There's also open source versions of quake 3 which *are* free, of course.

No more or less than currently - browser launching won't suddenly magically bypass any protocols the school has in place..and if they don't have any measures to stop the game being played, current 'normal' Q3 will run just fine.
