I mostly play games on my PC but have lots of family pics and some stored movies.

I was thinking of buying two 500GB spinpoints and set them up in RAID 1. These would be where I store the important stuff.

I was thinking also to get a 320 and put XP and my games onto that. My thinking is that it keeps the 500s free as storage and the 320 will be quicker for games and booting.

Is this right or complete tosh. I guess what I'm asking is does RAID slow the machine down?

it depends which raid you use, if you had some drives in raid 0 where the data is shared between the drives, it will speed up you system, raid one wont really affect it, it just a back up i think, and if you had a single plattered drive with your os and games on then that would be faster than the multi plattered large drives. i think thats right anyhoo, i might be wrong, hopefully one of the knowledgeable geniuses on here will enlighten us shortly :)

I have a 140 and a 250 already.

Was thinking of putting the OS and games on the 250 and just using the RAID 1 500s for storage.

Does this sound OK - planning to order today.

It sounds okay to me. However, bare in mind RAID 1 is for redundency, and isn't a backup for user error (i.e deleting files) ;)

Its just over the years the only real failures I've had have all been hard drives. With having them in RAID 1 at least if one goes all my photos and vids should be safe.

I'll be storing backups of my save games on there too but I'll install games and apps onto the 250.
