Ah ok, then you'll be wanting a DSL router. Wireless is optional, but may be better if she wants a bit of freedom as to where she uses it. Something like a RP614 would be fine for wired, although you can get cheap safecom ones for about £14. For wireless a WPC54G and a WRT54G would be ok.

You need a wireless cable router such as belkin or Linksys. Your NTL modem plugs into this, then the router plugs in to your PC via the eternet port.

You can plug the laptop in using an ethernet cable, but if she likes to keep the laptop near the kitchen :p and the comp is upstaris, then wireless is better. You need to know if the laptop has wireless built into it, otherwise you'll need a PCMCIA card so the laptop can pick up the signal from the router.

When you get this stuff, set it up from the PC either with the packaged CD or by navigating to the routers set up page through IE.

Only thing i worry about with wireless is living in the flat were wont others be able to tap into our connection? think im liking the cable purely for security reasons or am i worrying too much?

For the love of God, don't buy Belkin. Linksys would be a good bet, BEFSR41 if you want wired only, WRT54GS if you want wireless.

That said, I'd still buy the WRT54GS even if she doesn't want wireless.

As long as you enable WAP encryption with a nice long preshared key (to all intents and purposes a password) you'll be ok.

Tbh not even WPA/PSK is ultimately secure, but unless you've got a bunch of hackers living in your block its not really something worth worrying about.

Just realised that the linksys wireless can be connected either by cable or wirelsess connection so no need to upgrade when we get a house in the near future just read your post properly and looked at the product itself. so if i go out and buy this will it have all the cables i need with it? thanx for sticking with this guys all confusing to me

It should have a cable with it, which you connect from the router to your modem, then connect the cable that went from your pc to your modem into the router.

and if the laptop which she is buying today is wireless that will pick up the router or cable so just an extra ethernet cable at most :) excellent! cheers peeps really grateful for your help just one last question whats the difference in these two> Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router/4-Port Switch (NW-000-LS) and the Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G SpeedBooster Broadband Router/4-Port Switch (NW-006-LS) i use my computer for gaming most she will be maily surfing talking on messenger etc so i want the best but cheapest for my situation :)

ill go for the cheaper one of the two then cheers for all your help id better go before the shops shut ;) cheers again :)

The earlier revisions of the GS had a faster CPU and more RAM, but it's the luck of the draw if you'll get one of those or a lobotomised later version.

Hi guys, got this finally setup and working got the Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router/4-Port Switch in the end, just one question all works well on both laptop and desktop pc but my descktop pc internet connection seems to have slowed down some what and the laptopo isnt even on  any suggestions or is this normal?

Sry for my dumbness but how do i do that ?

*EDIT* just seen another post on NTL services being slow for maintanace checked out the service status page for NTL and my area is included so maybe wait for a bit to see if it improves

Goto Network Connections, open the properties for Local Area Connection, then in the little scroll box, remove all the ticks from the protocols except Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). If you want/need to share files or printers, also tick File and Printer Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks.

You might want to also set the connection to connect at 100M full duplex, by clicking on configure in the General tab of properties for the connection, then going to advanced on the network card's driver window, and then selecting the Link Speed/Duplex property and setting it to 100 Full.
