Hi guys,

Might be getting a Kitten from a rescue center tomorrow, it's 12 weeks old. Is this an age that the kitten are still super small? I just want my wife to enjoy it as a kitten as she loved them!

She doesn't know I'm getting it her so it's a surprise.

Cheers

(Any 12 week old kitten pics appreciated!)

Andy

They won't be tiny but will still be cute.

Voila two pics of my two kitties at about 13/14 weeks so yours will be slightly smaller (though mine were slightly small for their age coz they had cat flu when they were tiny).

Will the rescue centre let you take it without your girlfriend agreeing to it? I know it can't be the RSPCA then ;)

Do it and enjoy it!!

We've had a cat from them before so they don't need to do a house visit etc

They're cute but not as small as I'd liked :( Obviously having a cat the number of years they live I want to be able to appreciate their kitten life as well.

This is my two at about 10 weeks. They grow so fast at that age. You would need to go see them and see if they were "cute" enough but tbh if you've had an adult cat for a long time, it'll look small.

Seems a strange criteria to go on... it's not like you're missing their whole kitten life, you're only talking about a few weeks!

You wont get what you want at a rescue cetnre.

what you will get is a cat that should be a good way towards being toilet trained etc

if you want a young kitten you probably have to buy it, but be ware as some kittens are better ready than others to leave mum behind in the early weeks.

some breeders are less fussed than others

It's not an actual rescue center, it's a person who looks after cats/kittens that have no home, so they get all sorts.

Our last kitten we got from there but she was 8 weeks when we got her, that was so long ago that I couldn't remember just how big she got at 12 weeks.

12 weeks is a pretty good age to take a kitten from their mothers, I know it's quite common to take kittens at 8 weeks or as young as 6(!) in some cases but you'll generally find you end up with a saner, happier cat that causes you less trouble if they're left with their mother longer.

And a 12 week old kitten is still a bundle of chaos and joy :)

I got mine at 8 weeks and they were still a bit young. Poppy has always been a confident little lady but Sam was very skittish for a few weeks and still is around people he doesn't know/come in to the house noisily. With hindsight I wish I'd waited another week or two, might have helped his confidence to spend more time with mum.

Good age to get a Kitten/Cat if you ask me as it'll be Bold & confident, take them to early & they are frit of everything.

12 weeks will be fine, and they'll still be small with kitten fur so don't worry about that. Ours are 8 months old now and still only look like young cats. We bought ours at 9 weeks old from a local rescue centre/foster mum.

If you've not even seen the kitten yet I doubt you will be picking it up tomorrow. These rescue places normally like to check out potential new owners, where they live, how many hours you are home during the day etc.

And don't say anything like "I was hoping it would be smaller than that" either.

Check the pics I have of mine on fb mate, the ones from late November are about 12 weeks, we got ours at 8 weeks and they are pretty confident, happy and TROUBLE!! :)

Currently murdering the napkin I dropped and eating the crumbs from my sausage sandwich! :)

Breeders will sell kittens from 12-16 weeks of age, but you need to remember that cats will not be full grown until they reach 3-5 years of age. Cats are very different in temperament and good family cats are such as British Shorthair and or Maine **** (though Maine Coons are the largest breed of cat)
