Quick Passport Question

I've just booked some tickets for a gig in Dublin in August. I'll be booking the flight later today but I've got a quick query on my passport. It expired a few months ago so I need a new one at some point but I'd rather not have to fork out upwards of £70 for an overnight stop in Ireland. Is a passport needed for traveling to Ireland or will photo ID suffice?

No passport needed, but you have to have some form of photo identification.

I thought you would've needed a passport for Ireland.

Check with the airline I vaguly remember seeing that some are ok with photo id but some want a passport

The flight's with Ryanair if anyone's had any dealings flying to Ireland with them.
