Just got myself a Logitech headset with microphone because I want to get onto the OCUK ArmA II multi-player mainly.

Nobody seems to be able to hear me and I have no experience on how to get the microphone to work. Googling has brought up about 3 million hits, of which just under 3 million seem useless.

Does anone know a link on how I can get the thing set up, for instance if I need some extra software downloading or other stuff? That'd be great.

I don't know about Arma II in particular but if you can record your voice in windows sound recorder and people can't hear you in game then it will be a problem with the game setup.

If you can't record yourself you need to fiddle with the windows microphone settings.

So I should actually be able to plug the phones in (USB) and it should work?
Recording in WINDOWS works fine so the problem seems to be elsewhere.
What's with this Teamspeak thingy? I've heard about it, but I'm not sure exactly what it's there for or what it does.

Teamspeak is a separate program you use to talk to people through, each person has to have the program and you all have to be connected to the same server. You can't just use it in games. You would generally use teamspeak when you know the people you're playing with... I.E. friends/clans/guilds.

Hope that makes sense.

OK, thanks for the info.

Just one thing though: Does anyone know how or where I can test whether my mic is actually working or not? Nobody has given me any spoken response, and typed messages have been unclear as to whether I was meant or someone else.

you can record your voice in windows sound recorder

go windows control panel sound devices test hardware. you will see if your mic is working

in ts make sure in settings you input is your mike and output your soundcard.

some stero mics have issues with onboard sound chips like soundmax and realtek

If you can record your voice and play it back fine, it may still be that the output volume of the mic is not high enough. If you are playing your recorded voice back on your Windows desktop it would be easier to hear as there are no background game noises. If you have the mic output dialled all the way up, I know in Vista at least (and probably XP and Win7 as well) there is a little checkbox you can tick to give it an extra boost. I've had complaints that I'm too quiet before as well and it’s only by checking that box was I able to bring my mic level up high enough. In Vista you should find the box under the sound control panel and then click on the recording devices tab. Select your microphone then check the box. It's something like that anyway. It should be obvious when you see it.

If you wanted to test it out in game, I don't play ARMA II either, but I know in TF2 (and most other MP Source games I believe) there is a little microphone test button. Basically what that will do is play your voice back but with a second or so delay so it is easier to hear. There may also be something in ARMA II, I'm not sure. Also make sure all the obvious options are checked in game as well.

If none of that works, it might be you have a duff mic (although it sounds new from what you suggest in your post, but some stuff is broken out of the box). Try wiggling the wire going in to the mic and any other place which looks like a weak point for the cable to see if you can 'fix' it, albeit probably temporary. You would want to be constantly speaking in to it while recording or something as you are doing this to test. Try and see if you can feel breaks in the wire as well and try wiggling that about a bit to see if you can make it come good.
