Quick private reg question

Hi guys, I just bought a private plate for my dads Christmas present through newreg including printed plates. Just seen that they don't do the plates until the transfer is complete but I wanted to be able to wrap them up for him.

Assume I can just buy them from one of these online vendors who don't check the v5? Would there be any issues doing it this way?

No issues at all, no, though technically you need to have the BS AU 145d markings and postcode of plate vendor on the plate for MOT purposes but I've not heard of anyone having a problem.

Is there a particular reason why you went through Newreg? Unless it's one that was owned by somebody else previously all they are doing is reselling the stuff on the DVLA site?

Nope, no issues. If your MoT tester is very pedantic then maybe but ordinarily you can purchase plates online with no problems.

Cheers fox. Will see if newreg can cancel the printed plates, otherwise he can have a second set to frame or something

IIRC Newreg force you to pay for the plates when you buy the registration. I can't see the point in buying from them if it's available from the DVLA tbh

Was a lot cheaper through them. The plates were an option that could be unticked, I just thought it would be less hassle

Are you sure it was cheaper? The last time I bought a private reg (through the DVLA), it was cheaper than any other reseller.

This is very suprising. Don't forget the DVLA price includes all the fees...

That might have been something I overlooked. It's on the dvla site for 399, think the total with newreg including the 25 quid plates was 430 so might have overpaid a fiver. Was a bit of a rush thing anyway for reasons not worth getting into.

On another note, the other thing they offered was a 25 quid service to coordinate the transfer, take care of the "beurocracy" of it. I assume this is a con?

Of course it's a con. Getting a new plate onto a car is the easiest thing in the world. What I hate more is the process of swapping it to something else.

Still waiting on the retention document for mine.

Yes this shouldn't be an issue - my wife done the same for my recent birthday. She simply ordered them on line and within a few days they'd arrived and she has something to wrap for my birthday.

This is the truth - mine was so easy :)

Hopefully it'll be a couple of years before I have that experience. :p

Fox is also right - legally speaking you "should" have the BSAU marking on the plates. Having said that I ordered my last two sets on line and preferring the clean and tidy look I opted not to have any markings - I've never had any problems either at MOT time or with my local police. To be fair it would have to be a pretty bored / pedantic MOT tester that failed your car for that imo.

The DVLA price is an all-inclusive, all in price. Everything you need bar the bits of persex. No point buying from anyone else - it includes all transfer fees.

You can then get a set of plates made up for under 20 quid.

Yeah fair enough, lesson learned - although it's unlikely I'll ever buy another one! As I said it was a rush for various reasons, that fiver isn't going to ruin me
