I'm either getting the Corsair 520 or the Corsiar 550. Both are similarly priced, so you'd normally go for the 550w version, but I was initially recommended the 520 and when I asked about which one to get (on another forum) I couldn't get a straight answer. One was modular, one isn't. I don't know what that is or why it's good or bad. Then I got some sarcastic answers.

Long story short, which one should I go for, without taking price into consideration.

Thanks.

the VX 550 is more of a 'value' sort of psu, but its by no means bad, i would probably go for the 520 as its ment to be more stable, but the VX still would be ok i suppose, but someone was complaining on here the other day about their VX 550 going boom.

It is aimed at the 'value' market, but if you read any serious review of the vx550 it is clearly still a very good PSU: http://www.jonnyguru.com/review_details.php?id=135&page_num=4

There was a guy who's unit was faulty yes, does that mean the entire range can be discounted as not worth buying?

Anyway. RamHorn, the difference really is as simple as one being modular (the hx) and one having fixed cables (vx). The advantage of modular units is that you often don't need to attach every single cable to get all of your peripherals running, therefore the inside of your case ends up considerably less cluttered and this can also help with ensuring good airflow.
