Quick PSU 'Squealing' question

Hi all,

I think I know the answer to this already but I thought I would ask for clarification here before going out and buying a new PSU.

My wife's pc has recently been upgraded with my 'old' GTX460 1GB (stock clocked). The rest of the specs are pretty basic: E2160 @ 2.6ghz, 2GB PC8500 memory, 500GB HD, GB G31 E2SL MB, Antec Earthwatts 380w PSU.

I was having a little fiddle with the machine this evening and I noticed that as soon as I started 3DMark06 the PSU started to squeal (very high pitched). Running Metro 2033 doesn't produce the same noise although there is a fainter (hissing?!) sound.

I assume this is the PSU telling me it's time for a replacement?

Assuming this is the case what would you guys reccommend as a replacement? I quite like the look of the Corsair CW400 however I doubt it would be much better than the Antec unit (possibly won't be running in the best efficiency range?).

Cheers

I found this when it was starting to get past a certain output power point, replacing the PSU seemed to solve it for me anyway.

think I seen this question before.

in the nvidia driver control panel, try enabling vsync.

random I know, but can't hurt to try.

This was my thought as well. I can only assume that the addition of the GTX460 has pushed the PSU beyond a certain % of it's rated output (and thus into an efficiency range that it can't really cope with).

It is a few years old now so I suppose it is due a replacement.

EDIT:

Tried this and it didn't work, same sound although I thought I heard a slight crackling sound as well, I think it'd definately time for a new PSU. This pc also acts as our media server and I really don't want to lose everything on it due to a bad PSU.

I am wondering if its the gpu, mine makes a noise in certain games and folding. (GTX 480)

get the cx400, i've had one for 3 months now, and not a peep, it's a awesome little piece a kit, and does the job, common reviews seem justified in saying it'll push 500W all day long without trouble, for the price, you wont be disappointed ;)

It isn't the GTX460, I have only recently replaced it my main pc. It didn't make any squealing sounds in that PC (although it is running a Corsair TX750W). Also on closer inspection (listening to the pc at ground level) the sound is definately from the PSU.

That's good to know, thanks. :)

i had a HIS 5770 for all of a week (was overheating for some crazy reason) which would make a squeal if a loaded up furmark. Thinking this was a dodgy card, i replaced it with a sapphire one. This one is much better, but still makes the exact same squealing noise under furmark.

dunno if this helps or not.
