Silly question but do they work in the same way as the built in flash? As in do they fire as and when the shutter is pressed or do they work differently? Just looking to come up with a home made solution!

Broadly, they're no different to any other flashes, except their shape, size, placement and power. Other than that, they work the same way.

Yup, Canon macro flashes work exactly the same as any other Canon flash units. ETTL metering, wireless capability, ratio adjustments etc
