A Quick Q for those of you whom might know...

(google and the manual has failed me)

Are there any warranty ramifications/consequences if I cut/remove the plug on my new Sony flat screen?

I want to pass the power cable through a wall to a point on the other side.

Thanks! :)

It's been a while since I've come across a hardwired lead to a TV. All our HDTVs/Monitors come with a discrete kettle plug type lead. I think our old Sony CRTs came with hardwired plugs so maybe it's a Sony thing.

Why not run a short extension through the wall if the cable is hardwired and you are worried.

Yes - I was surprised that this was hard wired too - its brand new and a new model.

I think running a socket back through the wall is the best option just in case!

Cheers.

Strange it's hard wired, I would have thought most are kettle leads these days for that reason. I'd think they would use that as an excuse to refuse warranty.

Yeah as others say just an extension, a 1 gang extension unless you've got more kit there to plug in.

It's actually more common than you'd think. I installed a 3 year old 32" Panasonic on a wall bracket this weekend for a customer. That had a fixed lead. It seems to be the way with smaller sets, while the bigger stuff (42"+) is more likely to use detachables. There are exceptions of course e.g. Sony KDL-55NX813 uses a captive mains lead.

On the question of warranty, I can't see a good reason why a manufacturer would invalidate warranty if the plug were removed. Hanging the TV of installing it in a cabinet is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. As long as the new plug is installed and wired correctly and fitted with the correct rating of fuse then there's no difference.

Yeah I think i'd be cheesed off if they did refuse because of it but seems like a perfect 'get out' for them. Like you say, wired correctly with matching fuse there's no difference really.

My 40" Sony also came with a hard-wired lead. Doesn't have a cable tie on the back either, as that's apparently a feature reserved for more premium models. The fact that the £99 ones in Sainsbury's have them apparently passed Sony by.
