Hi all,

I'm thinking about setting up smoothwall 2.0 on an old p2-266 as a dedicated hardware firewall. At the moment my cable connection goes into my router then onto the pc/xbox360 etc.

Would it be possible to configure it this way?

Net ->modem -> smoothwall -> Router -> Devices

I'm just wondering if i'm going to run into problems doing it like that?

I use m0n0wall myself, but essentially it is the same.
What you are really looking for is:
Net ->modem -> smoothwall -> Switch -> Devices

Luckily you can turn you router into just a plain switch by turning dhcp off, and not putting anything in the WAN port.

I've not tried smoothwall my self, I'd be interested to hear what the interface is like.

I use to use smoothwall about 5 or 6 years ago and it was top notch then :D Had a box for about a year problem free!

I'm sure you will be pretty happy with it, you could out your 360 in a DMZ off the smoothwall.

Mmm, smoothies.. I used to love my old P75 smoothwall box - I'm sure you should be able to do what you want to do. There are numerous documents on the website that describe all sorts of configurations etc :)

Thanks for the replies, i'll look into it properly over the next week or so.

The problem i can arising is down to the IP addresses, i would imagine smoothwall would want 192.168.0.1 and so would the router.

I'm not sure if i could set them as static addresses, i'm wondering if that would cause a problem.

edit: I've just had a quick look at the router settings, i can set it to a static ip. I think i'll fire up the p2 and see what happens
