Quick question - DDR3 4GB or 8GB

Wondering, will I see much of a difference between 4 and 8gb of DDR3 with windows 7?

Mainly for gaming ect ect. Bit of movie editing.

Only £25 difference hence why contemplating the extra 4GB.
 
Dont some games require over 3gig of ram now but isnt there something like a 1gig page being used.

I know going from 4gig to 8gig in everquest2 it made a great difference especially after extended play. Even though I never saw the ram go over the 4gig mark.

Looking at my task manager:
Total: 8162
Cached: 2669 (im sure that was 1k something on 4gig, obv would make sense)
Available 4508
Free:2037

So availble resources is 2gig out of 8 and thats just with eq2 open in windowed while afk in game.
 
i was originally going to get 4gb but i have now opted for 8gb because of the major performance increase, and small price increase.
 
So a question along the lines of the op

I considering 8 or 16GB RAM not for games but multitasking.

I current max out my 4gb ram with Photoshop Firefox chrome and many other RAM intensive apps firefox being the most intensive of them all.

So will adding 16GB give me the ability to multitask to the max? Or will something bottleneck that ability.

If it's the rig in your signature then going for 16GB is going to be pretty expensive.

DDR2 costs a lot more than DDR3 these days.

Especially when you'd need 4GB DIMMs.

Sort out the rest of your rig before you add in 16gb of RAM. You been hanging out in PC World lately or something?
 
When I do new build for friends, I now install W7 64 & 8gb as minimum spec.

With the cheap price of DDR3 today,buying 8gb kits makes sense, tomorrow DDR3 prices might have gone through the roof, you only look back to DDR2 a few years ago, & how prices rocketed.
 
DDR2 hot rock bottom first due to overproduction, then there was the China/Taiwan earthquake. This rocketed the prices!

I would go for 8gb. In fact, I did! Like you say, because of the low low price, daft not to really.
 
With the price of the above mentioned ram it would seem pointless not getting it, but if your counting the pennies and your just gaming, surfing, etc....u wont really see any benefit to your extra money....have to ask yourself if the increased performance in video editing will make it worth the extra...

Its not for my current setup, it would be for an i7 build end of year.

So i think 16gb, will save the HDD from being used and will come in handy for the amount of apps and tabs i have open.
 
For the price it is now there is no reason not to.

I paid £75 for 4GB in 2x2GB in 2009

Ok the same spec (CL7 1600MHz) is still about £50 but if you don't obsess about timings then you can get 4GB of CL9 1600MHz for £24 which was just not happening 2 years ago.

Mind you I hit the jackpot the other day. The 4GB kit I got in 2009 for £75? Got an identical brand new kit for £12 delivered. Someone was probably on something when they were writing the price.
