my mate recently bought a pc for cheap, he has got a spare hdd for it as of yet but is wondering whether he can intall a copy of XP on to a external hard drive and have his pc pick up the external hdd as the boot drive?

any way this would work

Some motherboards will let you boot from USB devices (you'll find said options in the BIOS), but it's going to be quite slow overall.

I don't no why he would want to install XP to an external drive. If he just got a spare one why doesn't he not just add it inside the computer ????

I am unsure of what your trying to ask here.

sorry typo on the first post, he hasnt got the hdd as of yet, but he wants to get it up and running to see whether everything works

i shall let him no to check his bios and i will let you all know how it goes :)

thanks
