Quick question - formatting disk

I've got a hard drive that I used previously for storage. It has just one partition covering the whole drive and is NTFS format.

I'm going to put a hard drive image onto this disk using clonezilla, but I think I should probably format the disk first.

How would I go about formatting the disk? Normally I would just boot into windows and use something like partition magic to do it, however I don't have any drive with windows installed on so I will have to do with this with some kind of tool I can run from bootup.

Can you do this with the XP disk? I know you can setup partitions and format partitions using it but is there a way you can do this and not install windows. i.e. format the disk and then just quit the setup without going as far as installing windows? If not, how else can I do this?

Thanks

Alternatively you could use something like a gparted live CD or even a Linux live CD. To be honest though you can just plonk the image on the disk - it doesn't really need a format.

Thanks guys.

I used a gparted live cd in the end. Everything seems to have restored itself fine.

I thought the state of the disk wouldn't matter but I wiped it just to make sure seeing as this is the first time I'd done it!
