Hi, i was just about to order the 7200.10 from OCUK but they all seem to be OEM versions... how different are these from the retail versions and why arent the retail versions available?

cheers!

Retail versions of hard disks are very rare, I've been buying disks for nigh on 15 years and have never bought a retail one.

As I understand it the only differences are that you get a nice carboard box to throw away and a set of screws. For that you get a nice hike in price.

For OCUK this means a higher priced product in comparision to the competition and more warehouse space required. The bulk of OCUK's customers will also have the screws they need from their PC case purchases.

Basically there isn't a demand for the retail version when the OEM one is cheaper and to all intents and purposes identical.

And NEVER EVER buy a Maxtor Retail - they only carry one year warranties compared with the OEM's 3 year... Yep, pay more, get less!

That's how they used to be (DM9's and 10's, they might have changed their policy now though, being owned by Seagate).
