Quick question on intraweb and router

I used to have BT Broadband, and it was slow and kept cutting out all the time. I'm now on o2, and whilst usually getting 6mb+ and occasionally 4mb+, it sometimes either drops down to like half a mb or cuts out altogether.

I initially blamed this on the fact it was coming down a BT pipe from the exchange, but after reading up a little (Had the whole Steam connection problem) it seems it might be the router.

So what are the chances that it's actually the router causing cut outs and speed drops? It's a standard o2 wireless box which is apparently speedtouch and has problems.

Firstly, where is the router plugged in?

I've currently got problems with my extension wiring which I shall be replacing shortly to high quality phone cable.

The router isn't 'that great'. I prefer Netgear and Linksys routers, which is also an issue with my network with drop outs every now and then.

Um, it's plugged into a DSL filter splitter thingy, then into the phone line connection in the wall. Dunno after that.

Extension.

That causes some problems. Extension sockets can reduce the speed at which you connect as the wires running around the house typically pick up RF interference. You can reduce this by removing the ring-wire (see 'ADSL ring wire mod' in google - there are consequences for older telephones in doing so) but plugging into the master socket is always the best method. Extension wiring can also be of lower quality and are not shielded as well as the wires leading into your home.

Is it not possible to plug the router into the master socket?
