Quick question on SIMs

Wife has an old phone that uses a full-size SIM.
She'll get getting a new phone for Christmas that will require a Micro-SIM. Not an issue, a quick phone call to Vodafone and they will have one with us in a couple of days.
However, how soon does the new SIM have to be used?
My wife is literally getting the phone on Christmas day. I want to make sure she'll be able to use it straight away, so want to have the SIM in plenty of time.
Should I wait until a a week or so before Christmas, or could I get the SIM immediately, but she carries on using her existing one and then she moves over to the new at Christmas?

It's been a while since I've swapped SIMs. I've got a feeling it can all be done online now, so possibly we can get the SIM "now" and keep hold of it for the next 7 weeks?

Use the new sim on Xmas day, if it doesn't work use it as a template to cut the old sim.

I did wonder about cutting the SIM to size.
In the past I've swapped phones and haven't changed my SIM. I've had nothing but issues and I was told, on another forum, that SIMs are updated - that not all SIMs are created equally and it could be that my newer phone simply requires a newer SIM.
I followed that advice, got new SIM and everything suddenly started working without issue.

I don't know how much truth there is in that?
The SIM she currently has she has had for quite a few years now, so was wondering if it was about time it was updated anyway, what with the phone being a lot newer.
Is 4G SIM related? Her old phone very much didn't have support for this, her new one will for example.

4g is phone and sim related, I am currently using a sim I have had for years, probably on its fourth phone, cut it down to micro and now down to nano, sims are tougher than you think.

4g wise, you need a 4g capable phone, a 4g sim contract and finally a 4g signal where you happen to be.

I'm still on 3g and tbh the speeds are great.

We have all the requirements for 4G - New phone will be a Moto G 3rd Gen. Vodafone updated loads of people to 4G FOC a while back - I've been using it for a while, my wife was upgraded but didn't have a capable phone.

Thanks for that link. So looks like we can get the SIM, hold it back and then do the online SIM swap at Christmas (along with thousands of other people :) )

Cheers for all the replies.
