I currently have a 7700X under a DeepCool AK620 in my Fractal Torrent Compact. I have the two stock intake fans on the case, 3x120 intake at the bottom (although they're linked to GPU temp) and the two stock fans on the cooler. No active exhaust, although with front the intakes running there's a strong flow of warm air out the back.
The CPU manages to boost as it should, but only just. The CPU hist 95C instantly under load and sits there permanently. I know that's just how these chips operate, but if the cooling was genuinely keeping up then I would expect either slightly higher boost clocks, lower temps or fans not at 100%, right?

I've cleaned everything, tried re-seating the cooler and tried a few different thermal pastes from quality brands. No improvement.

I'm now looking at an upgrade to a 9850X3D, which has roughly the same power draw as a 7700X. Should I upgrade my cooling or is there just something wrong with my current setup? I'm not keen on an AIO so it would be something like an NH-D15 or Peerless Assassin 140, assuming that would actually be enough.

If you are hitting 95 degrees C with a 7700x then you are going to hit problems with a 9850x3d because they are hot running cpu's. I recently went from a 7800x3d to a 9850x3d that I was offered for a cracking price and to be honest I should have kept the 7800x3d as it was much cooler running and used a lot less power plus it also ran my memory at much tighter timings, something the 9850x3d simply fails to do. Do yourself a favour and save some money by getting a 7800x3d instead.

I was looking at the 7800X3D as I don't really need a 9850 but I'm finding it difficult to justify the £80 saving.

You say the 9850X3D is a hot CPU - the crazy thing is the 7700X is about the same. I couldn't find a graph with all three CPUs but these two together paint the picture. The 7700X is just a spicy boi.

7800X3D: 77~91W
7700X: 138W
9850X3D: 150W

By "load", what kind of load do you mean exactly?

Fully multithreaded load in a CPU-intensive benchmark, or just gaming?

The difference between these coolers and the one you have are marginal. I wouldn't expect it to help much.

Could it be the fans under the GPU?

I know the GPU will heat up in the case, but will the fans under it be forcing all the hot air into the CPU cooler instead of the front fans pushing it out of the rear of the case.

I have a 9800X3D in a Torrent with a Noctua NH-D15 cooler and it’s fine; I have a 7700 in another case with one of the Assassin coolers and that’s fine too.
