I currently have a 320gb wd hdd for Vista and my documents (music, files, etc) on 1 partition, and a 500gb seagate barracuda 7200.10 for storage of movies, videos etc.

I've heard this hard drive is great:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-053-SA
and was considering buying it to replace the 320gb.

Would it be a good idea to create 2 partitions, say 50gb for one and the remaining (900gb or whatever) for the other. To install Vista x64/games/etc on the first partition and keep my main documents/files on the second partition, and have the 500gb and 320gb's as extra storage?

Main concern is I format my computer every 8-12 months so I don't want to have to format the WHOLE 1tb drive, can i "full format" just the first 50gb os partition? and if so, will this affect performance? fragmentation etc? Cos i usually full format the entire hdd for a fresh os installation to be safe..

Thanks.

If you do partition a drive, and you want to format you will only format 1 partition at a time.

50Gb seems a tad small for vista, 100GB+ might be more practical.
Remember coping from one partition to another partition on the same drive will be a lot slower than to a seperate drive.

I will then most likely buy the 1tb and use it as 1 hdd purely for storage.

I currently have my OS installed on a WD Caviar Blue 320GB, any recommendations for a replacement?
Samsung Spinpoint F1 640gb?
Does 16mb/32mb cache make much difference in best drive to use for OS?
Please recommend! Need more storage asap so I can backup my files and re-format ;(

agreed, I would go for the Cavier Blacks.... and this is coming from someone who owns 6 Spinpoint F1's.

I personally wouldnt use them to prop a wobbly chair, stay clear :(

When you get access to the MM adam give me a shout :p
I'll take those nasty F1s off ya xD

Currently considering the 1.5TB seagate @ 110inc

or a pair of Sammy F1's @ 144inc

Can't decide
