Over the years of using PCs I've got into the habit of rebooting after installing anything. I know its a good idea after a driver/system update but I do it for any old piece of software too. Is this totally unnecessary these days? I'm staring down the barrel of a fresh XP install and I'd like to know before I start reinstalling everything.

Cheers.

I very rarely reboot when something I've just installs wants me to. I only really do it when Windows Update needs to reboot to let me carry on with any other updates. :)

Cheers guys, I'll stop being such a reboot monkey :D

It is a Bolloxbox, the amount of mods I've had to do to keep the damn thing alive.

Unless it's an 'important' piece of software - updates, drivers, office, IE7 etc. then I don't bother.

Even 'important' updates don't usually need a restart.

A restart is only needed if the installler is changing protected system files or settings, which it can't access until they are released by the operating system upon a reboot :)

I would have thought those I listed would fall into that category. :)
