Why do people blur numberplates in photos? Considering they can see it in real life, what difference does it make if people see it online?

Somebody told me to blur mine on a picture on my myspace and always wondered why!

I have seen photos on here with blurred and non blurred, whats the big deal?

Because if some crook is looking for a false plate for the same model and colour of car, they might turn up your pics in an Internet search and this will cause you a whole world of grief.

Of course they won't - unless you have a rare and exotic Ferrari this is a complete non issue and is purely extreme paranoia. It is far easier for a thief to simply go to Tesco's carpark and do things that way.

Blanking plates online is totally pointless. Although I am a complete hypocrit becuase I do it, simply becuase everyone else does :p

It probably is pointless on some occassions.
However, when an individuals details (name or whatever) are printed along with the vehicle and its number plate there's a greater opportunity to take advantage.

In general terms its probably just policy. Rather than evaluating each and every situation where a number plate is visible in-shot its easier just to blank them all.

Why risk getting caught removing someone's plates when you can find one online and get your mate in the local garage to knock some plates up for you?

Plus you've got to find a matching car to start with. My car isn't a rare nor exotic Ferrari but you'd have to trek around a fair bit to find another one of the same model and colour and that's when mine is one of the most common colours! :)

I do it because if I have a spec list of my car showing the expensive audio install or tuned engine, I don't like the idea of a thief being able to get my address from my number plate.

unless you talk about naughty things and you're insurance company finds a thread about you, saw that on some other forum where a guy talked about street racing and stuff, insurance company found the thread after he crashed and refused to pay out!

I do it cause everyone else does. :p

You...write the plate down than get your mate to knock it up :p

Yea right. If you also own an Audi A3 like yours it isnt hard to find another the same. The place you take your nearly new A3 for servicing is full of them :p

Exactly what? They can't get your address from your plate easily. And really, can you see a theif going to ALL that trouble? A quick walk around your local CRUZ will produce far more access to who has what high end audio gear and is less hassle than the internet.

Well Fox, the local cruz boyz don't have any audio gear worth nicking :D

And what was all that about the DVLA selling information on number plates to criminals?

Better to be safe than sorry, especially when it takes 10 seconds in Paint to do so.

How about a local thief who recognises the brickwork/building style and just needs an address to go on after that?

The only times I have ever done it is if I thought the picture just looked a bit nicer with a blank plate :p

Becoming more of the case in the customised/retros scene as well. Lots of people post up lots of build pictures and specs and how much it's all cost then find it gets nicked because it was tracked down by the plates. I might start blurring mine since there are regular theivings of classic and retro cars now the scene is so popular.
