If i have a usb harddrive connected, can i share it on the network like any other drive?

yep shouldn't be a problem (similar to sharing a usb printer etc over the network)

As mentioned, this is fine. Be careful when unplugging it though, make sure that you 'disconnect' in windows before physically unplugging, as the local PC may not realise data was transferred voer the network.
