Quick question?

hey,
i got a my first car about 6 weeks ago and im fresh out of washer fluid for my windscreen. Now today i was just gonna throw a kettle of water into it but then i read on the net that u need something with antifreeze in it which obviously makes sense in the winter, but what about now, will water do the job or do i need something else with some cleaning fluid in it? Also can u make it up yourself or would it be better to just buy some? Sorry for the stupid question lol just like to be sure on these things :confused:

Go to Halfords and buy a bottle, its only a few quid, and will be miles more effective than water. In theory though, yes you could make some yourself, its alcohol iirc. May as well buy a bottle though.

water + lquid soap works pefectly fine imo.

Now there is a daft idea. Foaming up in your washer bottle, gunking up the pump, and the nozzles.

I'd rather spend that little extra on the actual washer jet fluid tbh.

Fairy Liquid etc rots the rubber seals and will damage the pump over time.

Stick some screenwash in the bottle - you don't need a lot in summer as it's just an additive to help clean the screen. You need more in winter to stop the liquid freezing up in the bottle and on your windscreen. Some cars need approved screenwash from the manufacturer eg VW group becuase they use fan jets.

I just use some Halfords screen wash (that does contain anti-freeze agents) and water. In winter I use a lot more of the screen wash, and never had any problems with it freezing.

£1 or so a bottle for the screen wash. Usually gives me a few refills.

liquid hand soap foams too - still not going to be as good and you'll still end up with bubbles all over the front of the car.

I just use the pre-mixed stuff from the fraudulent devil shop in my VW.
