I'm about to push my E8400 past it's pathetic 3.2 it's idling at. Question, by what increments do you OC from here? do you go directly to 3.4? or....?
 
I'm pretty sure the E8*** series can do 4GHz without too much trouble, so yeah - try 3.4. You probably won't even need to raise your voltage.
 
Being new to this I'm understandably nervous. However, I'm sitting on 3.8Ghz at the moment. Another question, on CPU-Z it shows my actually Core speed at 2.8Ghz...wtf?
 
Hang on, it seems to moment I run a CPU stress test, it shoots up to 3.8Ghz, the moment the CPU idles, it seems to shoot down to 2.8ghz
 
Intel speedstep, reduces the multiplier when the CPU is idle.
You can disable if needed (C1E & EIST) in the BIOS.

Not realy, depends if you want your pc to run at full speed, or drop when idle to save power ect.
If your system is stable leave it enabled, you can disable at a later date if needed :)
 
Another question. I've so far only been overclocking the CPU by raising the FSB value. I've left the voltage as it was since I wasn't sure what I was looking at with the Americantrends BIOS. All the guids I've read and watched use Phoenix Bios which looks different. Anyway, RAM, do I need to do anything with it?
 
You might need to drop the RAM multiplier because raising the FSB raises the RAM clock speed too. Since you only want to be overclocking one thing at a time, it's best to try and keep the RAM as close to stock speed as possible until you're comfortable with your CPU.
 
Intel recommend no more than 1.3625 Vcore. If you can get to 3.8 on auto then you've got a good'un. Mine only got to 3.6 on auto. I settled on 3.8 as a good safe overclock, 37degrees idle and <60degrees full load. I used the temp. readings from CPU-Z as my 'true' readings and not what the BIOS says.
By the sounds of it you should reach 4Ghz no problem. What memory do you have?
Oh, and make sure you test for stability!
 
I've got 4gig Geil PC2-6400C4 800Mhz Black Dragon. I'm still trying to figure out where the hell the voltage settings are and what they mean. You cannot just type in the voltage value which sucks. I just wanna get to 4ghz and let it be.
